When my husband went to the hospital emergency room because he had symptoms he could not ignore and felt horrid. The doctor examined him and ran tests. Conclusion: my husband’s appendix had to be removed. My husband was prepped for surgery and his appendix was promptly removed. (He’s fine.)
When a pregnant woman goes to the hospital emergency room with blood running down her legs, she is told to fill a diaper and wait. There is no medical reason for her to wait. The doctors are well qualified and know she needs to safely end her pregnancy, now, but the state law threatens to prosecute them and take away their license to practice if they follow standard medical procedures. So they wait. If her water breaks well before the fetus can survive outside the womb, she is denied appropriate medical care, because laws have been enacted to pacify extremists who say they hold “a sincere belief” and “want to protect the voiceless unborn”. So she is denied medical care because she isn’t close enough to death to receive treatment and keep the doctor out of prison. (I don’t blame the doctor.) If she becomes septic (develops blood poisoning, which can come on quickly and kill you), her doctors might be allowed to safely end her pregnancy by performing an abortion. But there is no guarantee she can receive medical care even then, because extremists say they want to ban ALL abortions — they self-describe as “pro-life” and simultaneously are willing to let pregnant women suffer, risk permanent impairment, and death. The fetus is never going to survive, but their law makes it impossible to treat the woman. She is expendable — like a bus, another one will be along if this one passes.
If the woman becomes septic and she is permitted an abortion, it’s likely her recovery will take longer than if she received care promptly, like my husband did, so her medical expenses will be a ton higher and she will miss work longer. She will be lucky if she doesn’t die.
Let’s be clear, In both cases, no baby was going to survive. My husband was never going to deliver a baby. Full stop. The woman who miscarried had a dead or dying fetus. Not only wasn’t the fetus going to survive, but it had become a potential threat to the health and life of the woman who hosted it. So neither would deliver a viable baby. But my husband’s doctor was allowed to assess the patient and provide appropriate medical care. The woman’s doctor had to defer to the judgment of lawmakers who never met the woman and had passed laws which ignore the advice of medical experts who told lawmakers the laws endangered the life of all pregnant women.
The Republican lawmakers didn’t care then and — having heard the horror stories we all hear — they don’t care now (or they would fix it).
My husband was not told he would have to travel to another state to have his appendix removed.
My husband was not told the doctor on duty had a sincere religious belief which prevented him from treating my husband.
My husband was not told his wife must sign a consent form to allow him to have an appendectomy.
My husband was not read a script asking him to consider keeping his appendix or giving it to others as some states would require for the woman — she must have her “options” read to her before she has an abortion. Even though literally no one will adopt a dead baby, she must be read a script, the law requires it, no exceptions. (Is the situation not desperate enough for this woman? She has just been told the baby she wants cannot survive and now she’s told to consider keeping it or adoption?
My husband was not forced to view an ultrasound to see his diseased appendix.
My husband was not told to go home and come back later because the law denied him treatment until his life was threatened.
My husband wasn’t told he’d need to wait until his appendix burst to receive medical care.
What cruel assholes would pass such laws? The majority of lawmakers who put these laws on the books are old white male Republicans. Find them here:
If extremists get their way, doctors won’t be trained to perform an abortion and the ones that already know what to do and use their knowledge to save a pregnant woman’s life will be sent to prison. Some would also send the women to prison.
Who took away women’s reproductive rights and made our lives expendable? We all know it was Republicans and they’re not done. They want to stop access to contraception, eliminate no-fault divorce, ban same-sex marriage, and further erode voting rights. If they have the votes they will do all of that and impose a national ban on abortion.
Donald Trump brags about appointing Supreme Court justices that overturned Roe that brought us to this point. Who made this mess? Donald Trump did this.
Thank you for sharing this! You really did a fantastic job of laying it out and making it easy to comprehend. I absolutely agree with you on all points! Thank you for speaking up, you are so brave and you hit the nail right on the head. Thank you so much, again! 🥰😊🫶🏻
You miss the point. A fetus isn’t “a kid” any more than the egg and sperm are each half a kid. I will add that if sperm is half a kid, then men who jerk off are guilty of millions of murders.
But if you you are correct, IF the fetus is a kid, but — as in my example — it’s already dead (or has no chance of survival), then tell me why women should be denied an abortion (which is medical care to safely end a pregnancy) to prevent sepsis (blood poisoning) and death? Lots of things go wrong through pregnancy. Tragically, the brain or the lungs or some other vital
organ fails to develop in the fetus. When this happens and nature attempts to end the pregnancy, modern medicine can assist to assure the woman survives. It cannot be that it is wrong to save the life of a woman WHOSE FETUS CANNOT SURVIVE, but denying that woman an abortion promotes allowing the woman to die along with her fetus.
My husband was permitted an operation to remove his appendix, which was a threat to his life. Similarly, a pregnant woman should be legally permitted to safely remove dead tissue which threatens her life. There is no advantage to allowing that woman to suffer, risk permanent impairment, or death. Most pregnant women already have children. If our laws let her die, her living children will have no mother.
The maternal mortality rate is already higher in this country than similarly situated nations, we don’t need to let even more women die when well qualified doctors are trained to save them.
If you can’t be supportive of women who bear the risks of pregnancy, then I invite you to sit down and STFU.
Doesn’t matter. The maga sheep will devour whatever sheep food is shoved down their gullets by dear leader.
There’s no bringing them back to reality, which is why I don’t debate them anymore. Including the maga rubes in my family. It’s exhausting to continue to debate my humanity with people who think the earth is flat.
Don’t conflate MAGA with right to choose/ abortion. Pope Francis believes life begins after conception but he is hardly” MAGA”. I believe a lot of people with good intentions believe life begins with conception. The difference is that this moral opinion should not be mandated by law. The slogan “Make America Great Again” started in the 1980 Reagan campaign.
Today’s “head” of MAGA was a Democrat before he became a Republican and was in favor of right to choose before he was against it. He liked the slogan and stole it for the crazy 2016 election.
I believe many people believe abortion to be morally repugnant, but would not mandate that moral belief upon others who think differently.
The only people who think abortion is morally repugnant are those who don't understand basic biology and who have been brainwashed by fundamentalist lies. That's what this article is about. When you understand that a fetus does not have the capacity to think or feel, there's nothing "repugnant" about abortion.
Here’s a good way to think about it- especially when talking specifically about blastocysts. A blastocyst can be frozen and unfrozen years later and be “alive” (IE cells are not dead/ mitochondria is still functioning) A person, cannot be frozen and unfrozen.
That does not apply to live, viable babies. It applies to babies that have perished in the womb, are a danger to the life of the mother, to babies that have no internal organs, and as soon as they are born will die.
When does it gain the capacity to think and feel? Three weeks? Three months? Three years? Thirty three years? The individual egg or sperm is genetic material. The union of egg and sperm create life. That’s basic biology.
Truth is a slippery concept at best. My dad was once asked what it was like to be bilingual and he answered that it teaches you there's no single answer to any question. I'm actually more bilingual than he is (he learned German in his teens, age 16, I learned English when I was seven, so I became bilingual at a more formative age) but I'd second his answer. Thinking in different languages gives different perspectives. Newton's laws seem obvious but were replaced by Einstein's, truth changed. We each have our own realities, perspectives, but are any of them ‘true’? They're true for us, individually, but none of us should be so arrogant or entrenched that we think our view is the right one. The fact that we can discuss these issues and can change our minds because of discourse, that we can empathise not only with others of our species but across species is, to me at least, magical. It's that ability that has enabled us to exchange ideas, increase our understanding of the universe and to cooperate to achieve the incredible things we have. I also believe that it's cooperation, not competition that's the reason for our success and dominance as a species. No one person would have got to the moon, a truly astonishing achievement. We need plurality, different views and perspectives to advance. Just take music (I'm a musician): if all music were the same it wouldn't surprise and move us in the way it does (and, BTW why music does that is an interesting and profound question). The arts in general are actually a bit weird. There's no obvious gain from them, but there's no question they enrich our lives and give them meaning. I think they're fundamentally human and they're at least part of the reason I think we're basically a force for good. The things that make us bad, our destructiveness, violence and greed come from our instincts for survival and we've at least partly managed to look beyond them.
The only ones brainwashed are those who have dehumanized the baby in the womb. It is a human life, you don’t have to like the facts but I will tell you this they don’t care about your feelings
Since I know how a child is born, I did not need Trump to say anything. Also you will have to tell me what is on QAnon since I have never even been on there and obviously you have since you know what is said there
Yes I read the article. Doesn’t change a thing. Let’s delve deeper into this. A human being is a unique combination of some 39 trillion cells that believe they are one organism. Each cell eats( consumes energy), gives off waste ( poops), dies and is replaced. It also reproduces, hence we can live 80, 90 years and more as there is continued reproduction of each cell. Each cell has a specific function. The heart, an organ containing a billion or more cells, beats about 100,000 times each day, carrying 10,000 quarts of blood theough the body, providing nutrients to each cell and removing waste products. It is really a miracle.
The developing hild is no less a miracle, regardless what tou believe concerning its state or level of consciousness.
You believe a human being befins at week 28-30 during its gestation . Many believe the miracle begins earlier.
We have no argument ; do not equate moral repugnance with legal mandate. Women should be fiven the right to choose. But those who believe the miracle starts far earlier than week 28 should not be mocked. It’s not fair and it’s unbecoming for an intelligent person.
>The developing hild is no less a miracle, regardless what tou believe
Fun fact: Your opinion is no more relevant than mine. Your belief in imaginary gods and miracles is utterly meaningless and does not affect the reality that a fetus without a cerebral cortex cannot think or feel. Just like a dead corpse with zero brain function cannot think or feel because it's not alive.
Also unlike in red states with abortion bans, in Europe, abortion isn’t criminalized. Pregnancy is too nuanced to legislate. And women should not have to go septic before being able to get treatment.
Yes, Virginia, in most red states a BJ with swallow is subject to public stoning to death. Since men will never back off their desire for partners without a gag reflex, many women (and gay men) will simply have to die in the affected states in order for men to be happy. And everything is about making men happy. Sorry, swallowers! You will be remembered!
The sketch starts with Michael Palin coming home from work having been fired and telling his kids (of which there are far fewer at this point) that he's going to have to sell them to the research laboratory. It's from the film ‘The Meaning of Life’.
After looking up the link I remembered a Frank Zappa number called ‘I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth’ 😂
I can't believe he's not fact checked pretty sure when I was younger that they had to correct the person in the debate? Part of the reason Biden didn't keep up with how some of you wished, Trump didn't stop his run on Lie's not even to take a breath and you can see Biden shaking his head like I don't believe this ass! Of course years ago he just said will you shut up man! Sadly he had covid and wasn't up to dealing with the orange beehive ☹️
I'm going to Read the rest later & watch the rest of the videos great stuff and reliable sources Lincoln's Bible has some great graphs from years & years back but his supporter's are against taxes and see him as their hero until their Union jobs leave the USA and there the first in line for public benefit ya those socialist benefits
A male who spew’s spermatozoa MURDERS MILLIONS !!!!! Why is there no law against this, and why are they not in jail for life for committing spermatozoacide?!?!?!
Evangelicals claim that life begins at fertilization. Science tells us that up to 50% of fertilized ova never implant in the uterus. Up to 25% of pregnancies end in a spontaneous miscarriage after a few weeks. So nature or God doesn’t believe that life begins at fertilization or implantation.
My girlfriend is 52. She had a hysterectomy at 28. This past spring she had pneumonia and was in the ER. The doc asked her if she could be pregnant. She explained that she had a hysterectomy and they had all of her medical records at this hospital. The doc had her take a pregnancy test anyway! TWICE! And this is in Oregon. We don’t have loonie abortion laws on the books - yet. It’s insane here and the religious nuts want to turn this into a shithole country.
We already know the Bible teaches that it is a mortal sin to “ spill your seed on the ground”. Thus masterbation is at the same level as murder. Don’t know how horrible it is to pleasure a woman orally!
There maybe a couple of Red States left where oral sex is actually against the law, but I'm sure it's different for the male counter part that's on the receiving end😆
I have never thought the death penalty was “normal.” It’s barbarism cloaked in bureaucracy. An eye for an eye. A leftover of an older age. I had real hope for abolition of the death penalty when the data started leaking out about the numbers of innocent victims, mainly black men and boys, who had been executed, and then found not guilty. Not to mention the number of exonerations of living victims of death row. There is no rational explanation on this planet of how not a soul in power knew, and did nothing. Abetting murder. Most of those in authority, men, and not a few women, were white, affluent and privileged. The idea of that is as appalling as is the resurrected white nationalist movement/narrative that has reared, once again, it’s ugly, multi-head. Until we see all people as deserving of our humanity, including those that are incarcerated, including those that are guilty of crimes beyond our ken, we are not the leaders of the democratic free world.
I never thought it was acceptable even when I was a kid, I always felt that it's not up to me my uncle cousin & on to take a life regardless of the crime and as you said a vast amount didn't get fair representation and are inoccent, doesn't seem to affect anyone's consence and that's not a normal Society!
Republican right needs the mega like Lenon needed the Boscovich's a, bunch of crazy murdering crooks, they made it possible for Lenon and Stalin to create the Gulag courts. It pisses me off
Well said. It’s also important to note that the late-term abortions are generally stillbirths. Or there’s some dire health complication that makes it impossible for either the baby or the mother to survive. If a pregnancy sees its final trimester, the family almost certainly wants a baby. They would not abort unless something is horribly wrong. That lurid imagery that’s so politicized, which Trump irresponsibly tried to evoke in the debate, is a traumatic and heartbreaking event for families. And instead of offering sympathy and support to those families, conservatives publicize lurid drawings to use as kindling for moral outrage. It is sinister.
This article was fantastic! I love how you explain it in a bunch of detail, it was very helpful and incredibly informative. Thank you so much for your excellent writing. You make a ton of sense. 🥰 Please, continue writing, don’t ever stop, you are very good at It. You make so many great points on multiple issues and have given me a lot to think about, well, not really, because I basically agree with everything you’ve written. I’ve always felt very strongly about “my body my choice” if pregnancy was something men experienced I think abortion would absolutely be legal without question but unfortunately women are treated like second class citizens or worse. I love how you broke it down point by point and described it all in a way that is easy to comprehend, as well. The videos of John Oliver are very helpful as well and hilarious with his awesome sense of humor. Thank you so much for writing and for your brilliant points. 😊🥰
Compare these two situations:

Well abortion is now legal to term, at birth in 14 states. If you somehow believe this is ok then there’s no hope for you.

It's ridiculous. I'm reminded of the ‘Every Sperm is Sacred’ sketch by Monty Python. It shows how prosperous it actually is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8fheDIG_RA
The sketch starts with Michael Palin coming home from work having been fired and telling his kids (of which there are far fewer at this point) that he's going to have to sell them to the research laboratory. It's from the film ‘The Meaning of Life’.
After looking up the link I remembered a Frank Zappa number called ‘I Promise Not to Come in Your Mouth’ 😂
Take my upvote for the Monty Python reference!
Thank you!
I'm sorry, I've only just noticed, but *preposterous
And a heartbeat is a cardiac cell doing its thing.
Yes - words really don't have meaning on the other side.
It pisses me off
that some Americans support the insurrection.
